Balancing Emotions

Image
As human we operate on emotions and most of the decisions we take is influenced by our emotion, while we justify it logically. Emotions like anger, love, hate, sadness, fear, joy have some triggers to excite those specific emotions. Some horror movie scene triggers the fear in us, seeing someone we have crush triggers the love feeling in us and so on. There are three parts to an emotion: 1.       A subjective component (how you experience the emotion) 2.      A physiological component (how your bodies react to the emotion) 3.      An expressive component (how you behave in response to the emotion). These different elements can play a role in the function and purpose of your emotional responses. Emotions can be short-lived, such as a flash of annoyance at a co-worker, or long-lasting, such as enduring sadness over the loss of a relationship. But why exactly do we experience emotions? What role do they se...

The Subconscious mind

Image
The subconscious mind – something that has a huge effect on every action, but is constantly overlooked. Your subconscious mind is the seat of your emotions. It is a creative mind. It accepts what is impressed upon it or what you consciously believe. Instead, the focus is often on our conscious mind, which contains the critical thought function of our brains. The subconscious is the powerful layer underneath. It encompasses the awareness of all things the conscious mind cannot recognize. Once the subconscious is tapped into, this remarkable part of the brain plays many different roles in your everyday life. Whether we like it or not, our ability to control thoughts synchronize movements, or experience emotions depend on the depth of  information processing. The idea of deeper levels of information processing was developed and extensively studied by famous Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud who introduced the 3 level mind model. According to his mode...

Master the Persistence!

Image
"Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” PERSISTENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM In general people with higher self-esteem are more likely to persist on a difficult task than people with lower self-esteem. This seems intuitive. If you believe you are a competent person with a good chance of succeeding at most things, you are less likely to quit. What seems less intuitive is the following finding: People tend to persist longer at solving problems when they are told that what they are doing is difficult as opposed to easy. Why? Failing at a task that everyone else finds easy can be humiliating and damaging to self-esteem. In contrast,...

Live the life you want!

Image
The occasional punch in the face by reality is good for us. Case in point: on occasion, you’ll do, or not do, what you want because you’re concerned with what other people think. And it’s holding you back. No matter the “why” the truth is, at some point, we base our actions and decisions on how we anticipate other people will perceive us. As a result, we don’t always do the things we want to do, because we’re afraid of what others will think. Why do we care so much about other people’s opinions, even those of total strangers? Why do we do things, or  not  do things, because of how we expect others to react? I’ll kick this off with a disclaimer. It’s beneficial to have opinions from a few people you can trust to tell you if you’re doing something bat-crap crazy, or to encourage you to take a risk. Do something different from everyone else and you’ll be berated. Better to fit in. Unfortunately, I allowed a lot of opportunities to pass me by, ...

Joy of a Simplified life!

Image
A lot of people seem to connect with the message of simplicity, and yearn to find a simpler life in this world of ever-increasing complexity, of overwhelming technology Living a simple life is about paring back so that you have space to breathe. It’s about doing with less because you realize that having more and doing more doesn’t lead to happiness. It’s about finding joys in the simple things, and being content with solitude, quiet, contemplation and savoring the moment. For those seeking happiness, simple living is often promoted as a way to achieve happiness, or at least to achieve a level of contentment from which happiness and joy can bubble up. Why should we consider living the simple life? We will live a life of peace and not chaos, a life of essentials and not a complication. We will slow down and stop living the frazzled life, a lifestyle of stress. We will live the good life of pleasure, flow, meaning, and purpose. Though everything in life is impermanent,...
